Throughout the entire semester, there is has been an overarching theme stuck to everything I did — the pieces of art, whether it was poetry, paintings, sculptures, or music. There was always a deeper meaning behind the facade. We choose to read and talk about value in our own lives and the lives of people around us. I choose a statue of Thomas Edison, the “founder” of the college I now go-to for public art. I selected this because of the frequency that I see it but rather the reminder to do better and strive for what might now not…

Sea waves in the sky
Brilliant blossoms light the eye
Endless night is nigh

Van Gogh’s Starry Night is one of the most well-known artistic works. While most know of the painting and have seen it at some point in their lives, they have not taken time to see what the painting has to offer. I choose to write a haiku about the painting because it encompasses a complex image in very few words/syllables. Having the name Starry Night the critical thing you might look at is the intricate sky’s design, but artists rarely include something for looks. Meaning is…

In both the re-enactment and the actual events, most people on the street don’t seem to notice the stranger holding a gun right next to them. I think that his body language didn’t emit aggression, and so people didn’t pay it any mind for the most part. A few in the video see the gun but don’t call out or alert others to the danger nearby. The re-enactment might have been made with the police’s knowledge, but the people’s reactions still seem genuine. It shows the gun unloaded at the end, but people up until then would not have known…

Hamlet is one of the most remarkable literary pieces ever written, but all things have their flaws/critics. Plays and movies allow for a more enriched experience with the visual effect of the words. Having an image of what the story looks like and what people interpret and put on the stage can widely vary based on the individual’s experience. Horatio’s scene meets the ghost of the past king Hamlet I envisioned different from the movie adaptation. I imagine the spirit as more gruesome because of the age of the screenplay itself. It looked more like Casper, a friendly ghost just…

Anatomy of a Scene

Freaks

This old film is about a group of circus performers. Throughout the movie, it shows their camaraderie and friendships with each other. This is because the title could make you assume they are all circus freaks that don’t fit anywhere else in society. As the movie progresses, the trapeze artist’s beauty draws the eyes of a little person. She uses him for his money throughout the film and then plans to marry then poison him. The other people of the show wise up to it and seemly kill her and her conspiring companion. It is only…

I cant drive 55-samym Hagar

This song is about someone getting a ticket for going 125 in a 55. Throughout the song, a fast pace rhythm keeps an upbeat feeling. It makes you feel high on life and not a care in the world to be had like the car driver going 125.

My Hooptie-Sir Mix-A-Lot

The song starts with a description of his seemly run-down car.his tailpipe is dragging; he is missing three hub caps and has stains on the floor. Hooptie is a term used for an old car but is his car at the end of the…

We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks is about a group of kids hanging out in a club late at night. “The Pool Players. Seven at the Golden Shovel.” is a prelude to giving an idea of where and who we are talking about. The rest of the poem describes who and what the players are. The pool players are at some type of club or bar at seven am or pm.

“We real cool. We Left school.” This is an introduction to their thought process. For these kids, it is cool to not be in school. “We Lurk late. We…

My house starts with a long hallway that is directly into the living room. As soon as you walk into the home, to the right are three rooms, a second bedroom, a bathroom, and a front room that can be made into anything that is needed. There is an office space in the middle of the main hall, and if you keep on down the hall, the living room and kitchen can be seen. If you take a left at the end of the hallway, it will lead you into the master bath, bedroom. Now that I have outlined the…

Florida SouthWestern state college was not always the name the school held. Founded in 1962 as a junior college, FSW was named after Thomas Edison. It was later upgraded to a community college in 1990, and that continued until becoming a state college in 1992. Then tragedy struck, the Edison name was already under copyright from a school in New Jersey, and they were forced to change to FSW. They may have changed the name, but Thomas Edison’s statues stayed around to welcome you into the school. Edison had a winter home in Fort Myers, so the main campus was…

The Cafe Terrace is an abstract piece that entitles the title of the work. You can see the spoon used to stir the coffee and the unique table clothes used. These are in the painting as a tribute to the necessary level of the painting. Behind this is what seems to be a bottle of absinthe. This extremely alcoholic beverage is said to have strong hallucinogenic properties used by many artists for inspiration for their works. The overall painting looks like a rooster. This can be attributed to the cafe typically being a place where coffee and other similar drinks…
