The Cafe Terrace

The Cafe Terrace is an abstract piece that entitles the title of the work. You can see the spoon used to stir the coffee and the unique table clothes used. These are in the painting as a tribute to the necessary level of the painting. Behind this is what seems to be a bottle of absinthe. This extremely alcoholic beverage is said to have strong hallucinogenic properties used by many artists for inspiration for their works. The overall painting looks like a rooster. This can be attributed to the cafe typically being a place where coffee and other similar drinks are served to wake people up. There are also elements of the painting that are a tribute to the artist’s home country Mexico. The cigar box in the middle of the painting is evidence of this. Cigars in Mexico date back to Mayan times and Mexico is known for some of the best cigars. There is also a seal with the first president of Mexico that was of indigenous origin. There is also a desert camo and Mexican landscape at the bottom. This all is contained in what looks like a rooster held up by a corn stock instead of legs. The painting is not that big but holds lots of backstory and meaning within it. The painting gives off feelings of pride and love for his country. I chose this artwork because the work is relatively small, but with just a glance, you can see that it is full of different images that all have something to offer to the experience.
